Meaning: `foot-wrapper, foot bandage' (A. Fr. 259 = 435 M., S. Fr. 1080; H., who also gives the suspected forms πελλασταί, πελλύτα and πελλύτεμα).
Origin: IE [Indo-European]X [probably] [790] *ped- `foot'
Etymology: From *πεδ-Ϝλῦ-τρα, compound of πεδ- `foot (s. πούς) and εἰλύω `wrap' with τρο-suffix (Schulze Q. 317, 336 w. n. 1, Solmsen Unt. 233). But the monosyllabic Ϝλυ- and its length surprise.
